Sorry to be leaving

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to be leaving your class so suddenly like this.  I have a great new opportunity to teach in a different country and I can't afford to pass it up.  It means that I won't be able to get to know all of you and share this part of your photographic journey, and I will miss that a lot.  One of the things that I enjoy most about teaching is getting to know my students and sharing their insights, perspectives, talents, creativity and experiences.  So I am sorry that I will not get to share my experiences and knowledge with you, and I'm more sorry that I will not get to know all of you better.  If any of you want to stay in more permanent touch, here is my personal e-mail address:   zedster1@gmail.com

If you want to see the PowerPoint presentation that I gave in class, you can get that from Mr. Blazek.

Here is a link to the video about Exposure that we watched in class:

Ok everyone ...

Remember ...

If it looks good, it is good!
Don't let anyone tell you what you should or should not shoot.
You don't have to justify your art to anyone.
You be the judge.
Go out there and make some beautiful art!

Take care always,
Scott

WEEK 1 - COURSE INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Creative Work:  Photography  ART141

There are 2 sections for this course:   Section 1  =  Friday 13:00 ~ 16:00
                                                           Section 2  =  Tuesday/Thursday  14:30 ~ 16:00

This course should be informative and fun.  It will be a mix of lecture and practical work.  So you will be producing original work that will be graded on how well it demonstrates your understanding of the assignments and for its technical and artistic quality.

You will need access to a camera in order to complete the work for this course.  A digital SLR camera is the preferred camera for this class, but a high end "point-and-shoot" camera will be sufficient.  A cellphone with a camera or ipad camera will not be sufficient to complete all the assignments, so if you are using a phone or ipad you will want to borrow or share a better camera for the purpose of completing those assignments which require a better camera.  A better camera will be able to produce higher quality images than a cellphone camera, so if you want to get higher grades, you should try to find a camera to use that will produce the higher quality images.

You should check this blog for information about what will be covered in class and for homework.

Submitting Homework:

Homework should be submitted to me via my email:   scotteatonwsu@gmail.com

Email and Photograph Labeling Formats:

•  Your homework MUST have the following format in the "subject line" of the email:
     (section #)(name)(homework title)
     Example:      1 Lee MyeongBok Introduction
                          2 Kim Jeong Eun Introduction

•   All photographs submitted for homework MUST have the following label format:
    (section #)(name)(homework title)
    Example:      1_JamesSmith_self.jpg
                         2_AliceJones_self.jpg
IMPORTANT:   Be sure to keep the file type (  .jpg  )  tag at the end of the photograph label, because that is necessary to view the photo.

There are too many students for me to take the time to relabel of sort your emails...  So labeling is VERY IMPORTANT.  Please, take special care to label your emails and photographs properly.

Homework and Participation will be graded in 2 ways:   completed/not completed    or   1 - 5 points (1 = "poor" and 5 = "excellent")

Homework and other assignments should be turned in on time.  Late work will be graded lower.

** Your homework MUST be produced by you.  Using another person's work is not acceptable.

** Your homework MUST be new work that you produced specifically for the assignment.  Old works are not acceptable, unless otherwise noted.  (Work for the Final Portfolio should consist of work created during this semester)

THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT:   Title  =   INTRODUCTION
Due date:    Section 2 -  Wednesday 6 March,  6pm
                   Section 1 -   Saturday 9 March,  6pm

Make contact with me by sending me an email with the basic information listed below and a photograph of yourself.  You should use the following format:

Subject line:     (section#)  (your name and student number)  (Introduction)

Body:       Hello Mr. Eaton,
                 This is (your name)
My student number is:   (your student number)

Solbridge Mission, Course Objectives and Methodology

The prime goal of the course is to deliver the promise of SolBridge. SolBridge has the mission of educating the next generation of Asian Thought leaders. The school aims to instill in our graduates a Global Perspective, Asian Expertise, a solid foundation in Management Knowledge, Cross Cultural Competence and a sense of social responsibility.

This general education course is intended to enhance the student’s creativity and all-round development. In this practicum-oriented course, students will acquire the skills for creating new work and come to appreciate the process of creativity through the use of the photographic medium.

Students will learn the basic and advanced techniques and principals of photographic image making. They will learn to see and appreciate light in a new way and learn to see and design visual elements within the frame.

In this course, students will learn how to properly expose an image, to process and adjust the digital image using photo-editing software. Students will develop their understanding of the language of images, and understand how to make images which are important and powerful in their own right.

Required Equipment

Students will need to have access to a digital camera. An advanced point-and-shoot camera with manual controls is sufficient, but a digital SLR camera would be best.  Students will need to bring their camera to most of the classes.  A cellphone camera is permitted, but the ability to produce the required work and receive higher scores will be difficult or impossible.  So students that do not have an adequate camera, are encouraged to borrow or share a higher quality camera.

Plagiarism, Copying and Academic Dishonesty

I.      Plagiarism is the unauthorized use of another’s work or ideas and the representation of these as one’s own.
Definition of Plagiarism: “The practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own”. (OED)
This includes among others but not limited to
(a)   copying another individual’s or group’s ideas and work, copying materials from the internet and other published sources and producing such materials verbatim,
(b)   Using others’ ideas and work without proper citation of the original proponent or author of the idea. Students are expected to produce original work of their own for assignments and examinations.  A comprehensive definition and explanation of plagiarism will be given during the first class period, and students are expected to take serious note of this explanation.
These rules apply to internet sources also. Students are strongly advised to access the following website and learn how to avoid plagiarism. It is the student’s responsibility to learn this on his/ her own.
SolBridge considers plagiarism as a serious breach of professional ethics.  Plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form at SolBridge. Penalties can be as severe as expulsion from the university. To avoid plagiarism it always best to do your own work or cite the work of others appropriate. Refer to your student handbook for a more detailed description of plagiarism and the associated penalties.
In this class, the rules are:
1.     The first instance of plagiarism will result in a “zero” for the assignment in question.
2.     The second instance of plagiarism will result in a fail grade for the entire course.
3.     The third cumulative instance of plagiarism, academic dishonesty and violation of school disciplinary rules in this and other classes will result in serious disciplinary action which could include expulsion from Solbridge.
4.     The instructor will report each instance of plagiarism, academic dishonesty and violation of school disciplinary rules to the disciplinary officer.
II.    Copying Textbooks. copyrighted materials and academic dishonesty
A.    Copying Textbooks and other copyrighted materials without permission of publisher or author is tantamount to theft. Therefore, students are expected to purchase the prescribed books and other materials from the Woosong Bookstore.
·       Students using copied versions of books without permission will be asked to leave the classroom.
·       In addition, such students will get “zero” participation points and any other penalties as levied by the instructor.
B.     Academic Dishonesty includes but not limited to: (a) plagiarism, (b) cheating during examinations, (c) obtaining/ providing information for reports, assignments and examinations by fraudulent means, (d) falsification of information or data,  and (e) false representation of others’ effort as one’s own.
Some examples of academic dishonesty are: copying from other students during examinations; copying material from other students’ reports/ assignments and submitting the same as one’s own report; creating fictitious interview materials for assignments or reports. These are just a few examples and not exhaustive.
In this class, the rules are:
1.     The first instance of academic dishonesty will result in a “zero” for the assignment in question.
2.     The second instance of academic dishonesty will result in a fail grade for the entire course.
The rules on plagiarism, copying and academic dishonesty are non-negotiable.
